The Metaxa Distillery was founded by Spyros Metaxas in 1888 based and has been specializing in special liqueurs based upon Greek wines ever since. It achieved popularity in the early part of the century and has recently changed ownership, ending up with the Remy-Cointreau Group.
Metaxa liqueurs are a series of liqueurs based upon a distillate of Greek wines, including those from the muscat grape, which they describe as having the “highest aromatic concentration.” The liquor is then infused with a “secret bouquet of rose petals” (and presumably some other spices) and aged in Limousin (French) oak.
