The Tiffon House has a history entwined with rich past and present of cognac.

It was in 1875 that Mederic TIFFON founded La Maison TIFFON in the town of Jarnac. Sverre BRAASTAD, who was born in Gjovik, Norway, 10 July 1879, eventually continued the family business. At the age of 20 he emigrated to Jarnac, France, where his uncle, Halfdan RAASTAD, worked as financial manager at Cognac Bisquit. Sverre Braastad was employed there as a sales representative . 27 November 1913, Sverre married Edith Rousseau, granddaughter of Tiffon’s founder Mederic TIFFON. Sverre and Edith had eight children; five boys and three girls.

After World War I, Sverre left Cognac Bisquit to resume the family business and 6 November 1919 he established Cognac TIFFON S.A. Sverre Braastad bought Chateau de Triac, based 5 km from Jarnac, 4 December 1946, where he lived with his wife Edith until his death. Sverre lived until the age of 100, and was able to direct his successors in the future running of the company. He died 16 May 1979. COGNAC TIFFON is today run by Sverre Braastad’s son Robert and grandsons Antoine, Richard and Jan.

Cognac is tradition, and the family prefer to run the estate in the traditional manner. They grow their own grapes, produce wine and distil their own cognac. Cognac Tiffon owns 40 hectares of vines in the Cognac districts Grande Champagne (charaterised as the best of the six districts of the Delimited Cognac Region) and Fins Bois, with the white grapes Ugni Blanc St Emilion and Colombard. In addition to their own stock Cognac Tiffon selects and purchases wine and eau-de-vie from owners and distillers in the region.

Cognac Tiffon owns two distilleries; one in Jarnac and one at Chateau de Triac. The distillery in Jarnac has ten “Alambic Charentais” (still from Charente) each containing a capacity of 2 500 litres and can distil 25 000 litres wine per day. The distillery at Chateau de Triac has seven “Alambic Charentais”, and can distil 15 000 litres per day. 12 000 oak casks – each holding 350 litres Cognac – are patiently aging in Tiffon’s eleven warehouses.
