Joss Vodka is the first product of Nebraskan Solas Distillery. It is made from Nebraska-grown organic wheat and blended down with Nebraska water from the Ogallala Aquifer. The vodka is distilled in a specially designed continuous column still specifically for vodka. It was first launched in 2009 and is proud of the fact it’s the first (legally) produced Nebraska product since Prohibition. They want the brand to appeal specifically to, “connoisseurs of the hip and now.” Note: the Joss label appears to be discontinued.
According to the Omaha City Weekly, Solas Distillery–later to become the Cut Spike Distillery in order to pay homage to frontier railroad traditions–was founded in 2009 by Zac Triemert, who have experience as brewers behind the Lucky Bucket Brewing Company. The distillery was able to open from the personal lobbying efforts Nebraska Legislative Bill 549, which allowed for licensing for small craft distilling within the state. Today, they claim to be the first to produce and package liquor (legally) within Nebraska since Prohibition. Zac Triemert claims the distinction of one of a “small handful of distillers” with a masters degree in distilling from Scotland at the Heriot-Watt University.
