The whiskey was “Produced for family and medicinal use” by Julius Kessler & Company. This may have been the origin of the phrase that a drink is “good for what ails you” Kessler bought out several Bourbon County distilleries including the Paris Craig of Scott County as being the first person to produce “Bourbon”, local history attributes that feat to one group of pioneer distillers in Bourbon County including Jacob Spears and Daniel Shawhan. The key seems to be who first began to age whiskey in charred barrels, which arose from the discovery that the taste of whiskey in barrels accidentally burned was greatly Improved.
